Can’t wait to get started. Let’s go Let’s go. Hi, everyone. It’s Kara Goldin from the Kara Goldin show. And I’m so excited to have my next guest with us. We have Dr. Iris Rubin who is a dermatologist but also the founder of an incredible skin and haircare line called seen and if you have not seen seen, you absolutely need to get your hands on it is really, really incredible, especially the shampoo, but they have conditioner, and there’s just so much more to their line as well. I can’t wait to hear about the brand and the backstory behind it. But I’m obsessed with it. And the shampoo, as I said in particular is just quite terrific. It’s not going to clog pores and and is definitely sensitive or great, I should say great and safe for sensitive skin that is prone to skin issues, including acne, eczema, dry scalp, all of those lovely things that people don’t want to talk about. And right before we signed on a Reese was saying to me that she knew the backstory of hand and how, you know, a lot of this started with with me realizing that I had acne and trying to solve internally what was going on. But I’ve become really, really obsessed with also some of the ingredients that people are putting in skincare products as well as shampoos. And so seeing has really solved a lot of problems for a lot of people. And I’m excited to have her here. So welcome, Iris.

Dr. Iris Rubin 2:15
Thank you, Kara. It’s so exciting to be here. Yes. And I love your story and everything that you’ve done. And I’m excited to share more about seen and you know how it’s helping so many people with skin issues.

Kara Goldin 2:28
I love it. So you and I were talking a little bit so you’re a dermatologist, but you took a little bit of a break. You’ve got a family now and and then you decided you weren’t done, you decided to become an entrepreneur and jump in and develop these products. So first of all, what were you thinking?

Dr. Iris Rubin 2:51
When sister who went to she went to Harvard Business School when I went to Harvard Medical School, but she started she started after me finish before me with a lot less debt. But anyhow, she once gave me a plaque that she took, she took a leap and found her wings on the way down. And I think that’s how I’ve always lived my life is like if something is worthwhile, if it’s worth doing, you know, and my wife was very clear for doing scene, you know that if you if you iterate and persevere enough, it will it will it will find its way so if I knew now what it takes to do it, I think it would have been more intimidating than at the time I’m like, oh, yeah, the world needs a good first skin haircare product, like, let’s make it and it was kind of as simple as that and then going through the analytics of okay, how do I get started? What

Kara Goldin 3:42
do we need to do? Well, ignorance is bliss, right? And that’s the if you I have many sayings that would go along with what you’re saying the if you think too much about the end, you’ll never get past.

Dr. Iris Rubin 3:56
I mean, I think it’s just about like, you know, getting started. And, and also, you know, I think I would just build on the ignorance is bliss. It’s like, I always knew that, you know, I am I’m got that science brain, but then I would need to surround myself by an amazing team who had the experience in, you know, aspects of the business that I’m not familiar with. So I think that’s also been, you know, huge is not trying to do it all myself. So

Kara Goldin 4:24
you are a dermatologist and you’ve seen a lot of skin issues. Obviously over the years a lot of people don’t connect haircare products or even so with some of the issues that many people probably have come into your office over the years for but you had seen it on your own skin. Can you talk to us a little bit about the problem that you saw on and what really made you create these incredible products.

Dr. Iris Rubin 4:55
Thank you, Kerry, appreciate it. Well, you know, seem kind of found in It really is a problem solution brand I was not looking to create a brand. So my background, I am a dermatologist I’m PDF PDF, I ran the laser surgery program at Children’s so I did pediatric laser surgery treating babies and kids with disfiguring Birthmarks and scars. But I myself was getting having skin issues from haircare in my case, it was actually acne. And acne is a tricky thing. Because oftentimes, when you use something that makes it worse, it can take a couple days to identify. So for me, I would notice whenever I would go get my hair done at the salon, I would break out but it was five to seven days later. So then I said, Okay, let me stop using leaving products when you just use shampoo and conditioner, and it was still happening. And I was like, well, like what you know, how is this happening? And you know, I started of course by finding the science and we did a study showing that anytime use a haircare product, it actually can leave a residue on your scalp, your face your body for hours later. And we can get into some of why that’s occurring. But you know, I just felt compelled to create create a line that would benefit. You know, the many people like myself who are having skin issues from haircare products.

Kara Goldin 6:12
So did you determine like, what was it? Was there one or two ingredients that were actually kind of triggering this acne on you?

Dr. Iris Rubin 6:21
Yeah, so um, so first I, I, you know, like canvass the internet. And there’s so many people talking about haircare affecting their skin. I mean, the Kardashians were talking years ago about you know, conditioner and back acne. But many people talk about haircare products affecting their skin. But what I did is I, I made a spreadsheet of every ingredient, I could find any data on what’s called mutagenicity, which means will clog your pores. But a lot of that data is actually from rabbit ears, which doesn’t really translate to humans. So it’s not as simple as like, Okay, here’s the data and it’s one or two ingredients, it turns out, there’s a lot of ingredients that will clog your pores. And it’s not just the individual ingredients, but how they mix and the amount of the ingredients really matters. So it took over four years to get the initial formulas for seen right before we launched because it really was tricky to kind of figure out you know, all these all these details that really matter. What was

Kara Goldin 7:18
the moment when you said I need to go do this, then when you really saw that there was this problem out there that was so universal and you knew how to fix it. Do you remember that day when you thought like I can do this?

Dr. Iris Rubin 7:33
You know, I just think I mean we’re called theme because if you’re if you’re acne prone like me care, I know you’ve been through it like you know, it is so much more than just about your skin. You know, we’re called seeing because if many people if you have acne like like I’m acne prone, they don’t want to be seen if they have acne or if their hair doesn’t look good. And so I just to me, it was crazy that so many people are investing all this in their skincare, going to the dermatologist using topicals using prescription medications and then getting in the shower and bathing in poor clogging ingredients basically like it’s almost like dumping you know, oil on a freshly paved baby I just it to me just seemed crazy. So I think that moment I said you know what, I really want to do this and then when we got the study back showing that yes in fact, even rinse out products leave a residue on your skin for hours as a dermatologist if you use a product, it gets on your skin and it can stay on your skin for hours. To me that makes it skincare and so it just seemed a big hole because haircare just hasn’t been designed with the skin in mind and we started with acne but it turns out especially our fragrance free products have a huge benefit in eczema prone skin. Also our product some great benefit for sensitive skin, dry scalp even even there’s a study we did out of Harvard using our fragrance free shampoo conditioner that showed benefits in hair shedding with women with female pattern hair loss so it just felt like something I I just felt compelled compelled to do. So

Kara Goldin 9:04
I have talked to many women who especially later on in life, but I feel like it’s happening to even people younger, where they they’re losing their hair. Right Yeah, during different periods. And I loved reading about that study. Can you share a little bit more about that? Yeah,

Dr. Iris Rubin 9:26
so we were actually approached by the head of the Harvard hair loss clinic to test specifically so seen we have fragrance free and we have scented and but specifically our fragrance free shampoo and conditioner. And I think I think we may be the only you know haircare product I know that’s been tested in a randomized control study at Harvard was statistically significant results but it was in women who have female pattern hair loss. So that’s the genetic type of hair loss that many of us deal with. And after six months of using frequency shampoo and conditioner, there was 44% less hair shedding compared to control which is more More than 10% of the human head saved over the course of a year just by changing to shampoo and conditioner. So seen as not medicated. But the reason that this makes sense to me is your hair follicles are literally the manufacturing plant for your hair. So if you’re putting certain irritants or allergens or other ingredients that aren’t supporting or nurturing that hair follicle that could potentially impact hair health. So

Kara Goldin 10:25
the fragrance free products have the national eczema Association seal why was that super important for you to get

Dr. Iris Rubin 10:34
here because I think there’s just not a lot of options. If you are have eczema and you’re looking for fragrance free product or if you have migraines or your partner may have migraines, we saw a lot of people coming out of COVID and having changes in their, in their smell where they couldn’t tolerate fragrance. So there’s so many reasons to go fragrance free. But it was important to have that eczema seal so that people’s eczema prone skin know that this is safe for them. And I think a lot of times, you know many of the other fragrance free shampoos, you know, they just may not deliver that luxury hair experience. I know we’ve talked a lot about the skin. But the reason it took us over four years to launch is because it had to be amazing haircare and hey, by the way also has these benefits for acne or eczema prone skin. And we hear all the time from customers who say this is life changing or game changing, they finally have the confidence to be seen because their hair actually looks good. Now, you know, in addition to not exacerbating their skin so you know, we’re really proud to have the national eczema seal of approval and proud to be able to offer something where your hair will actually look amazing. And it can respect your skin’s needs.

Kara Goldin 11:46
So you launched with the shampoo. That was the first and you had a conditioner at the same time or what were the first products and how has that changed? Yeah, we

Dr. Iris Rubin 11:57
launched their shampoo, conditioner and blowout cream. And then we’ve we’ve grown since then we now have a deeper conditioner. We have a curly cream. You know, in many of our products, I think we did almost 30 versions of the curling cream I’m actually naturally curly. But I wanted something where you could just be one product. Many of us curly girls are layering on lots of products. Of course now we have magic serum, which is also great. So I will layer that on. You know, we came out with a deeper Conditioner. This year we launched a scalp serum for people with dry scalp that is really just amazing. It’s got so much science behind it being I think what differentiates seen you know, the world really didn’t need another shampoo is just We’re super science based and we bring skin science to haircare and then we won’t make a claim unless we have clinicals. You know, we’ve got dermatologists graded acne study, dry scalp study, you know, we’ve got the national eczema seal of approval. So we’ve kind of you know, built it from starting with three, three core skews to now you know, many more than that coming scented and fragrance free and building. You know, the science continues to build as well. That’s

Kara Goldin 13:05
awesome. So obviously, you’re available online, but what retailers are, are you going into? Are you going into more dermatology offices?

Dr. Iris Rubin 13:15
That’s a great question. So yes, we are. We’re actually sampled by over 2000 dermatology offices and so many dermatologists themselves do scene which is amazing. And we scene can be found on our website. Hello scene.com. Amazon, and Ulta is an amazing partner with us. We are in about half of all the stores. But we also just launched a little mini of our magic serum in all the stores in the front the impulse section. So that’s really exciting for us.

Kara Goldin 13:41
Can you talk about the magic serum? Which is amazing, too.

Dr. Iris Rubin 13:45
Yeah. Okay, so the magic serum, I think the magic serum actually really embodies the essence of scenes. So this one actually only has three ingredients, they all happen to be naturally derived. And, you know, I get this question a lot if seen as natural or organic. And we actually believe in natural when it’s skin friendly, and we combine it with safe synthetics. But not all natural ingredients are skin friendly. So poison ivy is 100% natural, but in this case, you know this is three naturally derived ingredients. And we call it magic because it hydrates, it has heat protection up to 450 degrees as is 81% less breakage in a in a single use adds shine. You know it really is magic, and it’s really lightweight. I use I love magic serum. It’s actually one of our best sellers and

Kara Goldin 14:37
alta. That’s awesome. So you put on the shampoo conditioner and then you use that before you’re blow drying your hair. Yeah,

Dr. Iris Rubin 14:43
you can use it on wet or dry hair, I think. Yeah, you know, it’s either one but one thing I would say about magic serum that also embodies kind of the philosophy of seeing is that it’s not a product where you don’t want to display it. It’s actually See if I can open this here. It’s actually quite attractive. And, you know, that was really important. Let’s see, we didn’t want it to be something where people were screaming, oh, you’ve got acne, you’ve got eczema, you’ve got dry scalp, you know more just like, this is a better for you product that diversities, Hair Benefits, and it’s cosmetically elegant and also, you know, have, you know, an attractive appearance. So that was really important to us.

Kara Goldin 15:23
And it’s not just for a time when you’re having flare ups, I guess, in your skin, either. It’s for whatever. Yeah,

Dr. Iris Rubin 15:31
and many people you know, we talk about the skin benefits because they’re so unique, but many people you’ve seen just because it’s clean, vegan, cruelty free and has the benefits of strengthening smoothening you know, healthier looking hair. So we have so many people that you’ve seen that have absolutely no skin issues whatsoever, but just love the clean and functional luxury luxury benefits that it delivers.

Kara Goldin 15:54
I think so many people are used to looking at ingredients labels now whether it’s on their food or drinks or beauty products, but I think the the number of people who I meet who have not even really looked at their shampoo, you know, sulfur free seems to be our sulfite free I should say seems to be like the key thing that is almost greenwashing and many shampoos out there or soaps out there. But there’s so many other ingredients. What do you think is one that irritates people skin too, that maybe you’ve run across over the years that people are not aware of? Yeah,

Dr. Iris Rubin 16:30
I think that’s true care, though you’re just helped food got cleaned up. I think like, you know, skincare has been cleaned up and haircare is just you know, now I think getting getting cleaned up. And when I think about you know, using traditional products versus using seem like if you’re going to use a product that’s going to, like people deserve to know if it’s going to impact your skin, it’s almost like okay, if you’re gonna eat a bag of Oreos, you should know that versus eating it’s attribute choice. But you know, there’s there’s a whole host of ingredients so I always think of when I any ingredient for seen I think of Okay, is it good for you, we think about as a good friend in that environment. And is it good for skin and for good for skin? It’s like is it going to be an irritant or an allergen? Or is it going to clog your pores? So I think irritant allergen wise, you know, certainly sulfates can be an irritating, they’re a surfactant, that’s a bit harsh and so it can dry out your hair can cause color to fade. It can also cause you know, dryness on your on your face and your on your scalp. If it runs down your face. There’s some preservatives. I hope I can say this them right but methyl i So sup fellas Zola known and methyl chloral. I feel Yeah, fellas zone. And that’s a big one. That’s, you know, on products that, you know, can be problematic for people in terms of being irritating. So, you know, and then for some people fragrance can be near Tinder and allergen not for everyone. But those are some to certainly consider. And then you know, on the pore clogging side, a big one that I see in products is coconut oil tends to be highly comedogenic. And, you know, it obviously depends on how much is in there. But that’s a big one that I see in certain waxes, oils and polymers, but it’s tricky. There’s ingredients that have random names like Loris for that no one would think to look up, but look at that, you know, maybe highly committed genic. So it’s it’s complicated. I think my my advice is always to go with a brand that that you that you trust. But these are, you know, it’s always good to try and read the labels as well. Yeah,

Kara Goldin 18:34
and I feel like you can’t even do that with so many of these because they’ll change formulations, they’ll change one ingredient. And you won’t even see that on the you know, you’ll trust you’ll trust a brand, initially because you figure Oh, they’re not going to do it. And then suddenly, it has changed. I’ve seen this on soaps on hand soaps a lot. So and especially if a company gets sold. It happens over and over again. So I think it’s it’s great to know that you’re you’re doing the right thing, and you’re really, you know, a trusted a trusted brand. Because I think it’s a it’s not easy for for consumers to be able to figure out what exactly they should be looking towards. Yeah,

Dr. Iris Rubin 19:19
and I think at you know, haircare doesn’t usually have the claims say for sensitive skin non irritating noncomedogenic on them. But if you can find brands, like seeing that, you know, had a claim like that, that can also be you know, helpful for people who have sensitive skin or acne.

Kara Goldin 19:38
So you have this idea, you know how to solve a problem. You’ve got the credibility, you’re a dermatologist, but still it’s a physical goods product that you’ve got to launch and figure out the formulation. What was the biggest challenge that you ran across in launching your own brand and and physical products company.

Dr. Iris Rubin 20:02
Yeah, I think the biggest challenge was actually getting a formula where it’s good for hair and skin because you’re trying to optimize against two metrics. And in addition to that, we’re like, by the way, we don’t want to include silicones, which is, you know, a big one sulfates, phthalates, parabens, dyes, gluten soy, so we gave this long list and it’s like, okay, what is actually going to be in it? So, you know, I, we worked with multiple chemists, we finally found just this amazing team who did so many versions for us, but I think it was just staying really focused on the mission and, you know, being able to get that product. Right. And that’s even now. I mean, we, you know, we’ve launched, I’d say, nine core skews, they come in various sizes scented, fragrance free, but I am always, you know, I will, we’ve had some products are under development for years still. Because I will never launch something until it’s been, you know, optimized for hair and skin. I test the products, but they also go through third party testing. So I think that’s been, I would say the biggest challenge is just you know, was getting the initial formulas. And

Kara Goldin 21:14
how have you gotten the word out about the brand? So you launched when what was the year that we launched? 2018?

Dr. Iris Rubin 21:20
We just turned five. So we get? Yeah, I mean, we’ve gotten the word out through our marketing team through social media, and dermatologists have been amazing. For us. I think that’s one of the biggest ways that we’ve gotten the word out. And, you know, we sample as I mentioned, over 2000 dermatologist offices, you know, we do work with influencers. Those are those have been like the biggest strategies.

Kara Goldin 21:45
So the same product is going into dermatologists offices versus like, Alta, has that been a challenge for you to? Like, I know, sometimes you have a different formulation between the two. But have you used the same? We have,

Dr. Iris Rubin 22:03
but our strategy in the dermatology offices is to sample so they’re really like a customer referral source rather than we do sell in some dermatology offices. But you know, many don’t want something that is going to be broadly available at Ulta. So but there have been many, you know, amazing brands built on on that strategy of sampling in the dermatology offices. So that’s been our core focus there.

Kara Goldin 22:27
Definitely. I mean, I think that there’s, yeah, I mean, there’s I live just outside of San Francisco, I’m sure there’s tons of dermatologists in San Francisco, for sure, that should have your product because it’s, I hear this over and over again from so many people and then, you know, it’s it. There are so many consumers to that, whether you’re trying to fight acne or you’re actually losing your hair, you know, then you start to wonder, is it hormonal? Is it something that I’m putting on my skin? Is it you know, the haircare products,

Dr. Iris Rubin 23:05
and I think care to your point, it’s often multifactorial, but if you are, you know, dealing with any of these issues, I think it’s helpful to know you know, if you’re acne prone, you want a head to toe solution, anything you put on your skin should not make it worse should not be comedogenic that’s your sunscreen, that’s your makeup, that’s your, you know everything and even what you put in your body, like your story with, you know, with with clean water versus diet sodas, I mean, so it’s really just this holistic approach. And I think you know, so we’re not trying to say that were the cure for acne or eczema or hair shedding, but certainly, you know, using our products can be beneficial if you’re struggling with one of those conditions. And you know, again, if you’re investing in in many people invest in a great skincare regimen and then undo it without knowing it with their haircare regimen.

Kara Goldin 23:53
And you have that that cute little it’s not a device I guess it’s a scalp massage your scalp massager? That is That is amazing. So and it totally makes sense. I mean, I really started you got me really thinking about, you know, the skin that is underneath your hair. I mean, how many people have just really harmed and that’s why they’re harmed those follicles and can you actually bring them back? Have you heard from consumers over the years that they’ve seen their hair started growing for the first time?

Dr. Iris Rubin 24:31
You know, we since we’re not medicated we like have to be careful about any claims around that. So you know, we’re not we’re not a hair growth product, but we certainly have seen people where it has benefited them feeling that they have healthy hair. You know, my mom’s actually a good example. She has really significant female pattern hair loss and she had bought a wig right as we were launching scene, but she was able to not Were the wind by changing, just seeing because she was another big aspect is the volumizing aspect. So she was able to get the volume that she needed, you know, the hairs that she did have to look, you know, full and, and grace where she didn’t need need to use to use the wig. So yeah, we certainly do have people that feel like their hair shedding has improved and female pattern hair loss. So you know, it’s really gratifying to hear about that hear

Kara Goldin 25:26
that? No, definitely. Looking back on creating you started in 2018. And you’ve grown immensely. What is there anything you do differently than starting your company that maybe, you know, you’re like, Oh, why did I do that? Why did I launch and that retailer, I should have launched direct to consumer and gone full force. You know, much sooner, I should

Dr. Iris Rubin 25:57
always think so I think a couple of things like we had to, we had a couple rounds of formulators before we actually got our products, right. And so I think just like not being afraid to pivot in other areas, when things may not be going exactly the way that you know, we wanted them to maybe like, you know, making changes earlier in certain areas, and then I’d say the other thing that I would do differently is, you know, when we launch scene, and when you look at it in Alta, one thing we’re trying to, I’d say optimize is just to make it really clear that this is founded by a Harvard trained dermatologist and make that more clear and apparent. I think initially, we were afraid people, you know, when you see Doctor founded, sometimes you think, oh, it’s not going to smell good, it’s not going to feel good. It’s going to, you know, not make my hair look great. But I think there’s a way to tell the story where yes, it’s founded by a Harvard trained dermatologist, but also a woman who wants her hair to look beautiful. And that’s the whole point of seen that it’s no compromise. It’s amazing care and good for the skin. So I think those are the two things that I would do differently. I’m sure there’s others as well. Someone said recently, you know, you you make a decision, and then you learn the lesson when you’re an entrepreneur. So, you know, it’s always, it’s always there’s always a learning learning curve. Yeah.

Kara Goldin 27:15
And you have to take the time to go back and learn those lessons sometimes, too, because I think, you know, it’s not just about moving forward. It’s actually like, What could I have done differently? And I think that the, that’s what makes the best entrepreneurs, which it sounds like, you know, this as well. So that’s, that’s amazing.

Dr. Iris Rubin 27:34
It’s great. I mean, yeah, I care. I think that’s true. You’re always you’re always learning and I think that’s, that’s what I love, actually also about, you know, I never saw myself as an entrepreneur, but my twin sister, I look back, she always had us in businesses from go were the kids of immigrants. And so, you know, we didn’t grow up with a lot of money. And she, you know, we we made bear magnets that we sold, we made tie dye outfits that we sold, we used to sell cokes at the golf course, like before, all the golf courses were enclosed, you know, which is probably a good thing with the balls flying out. But, um, yeah, so I think, you know, in a way, she was always my role model for business. But, you know, I do love being an entrepreneur, because it’s always interesting and a challenge. And, you know, it’s not like the same old, although it’s, it definitely is a marathon. I think that part I didn’t, I didn’t realize I didn’t realize that it’s like, you know, years to build a brand and get the brand awareness. And, you know, we’re still in the middle of that. I mean, I think many people have heard about seeing, but we’ve a long ways to go to really reach the people who can benefit from seeing, it’s

Kara Goldin 28:41
so true, it does, it takes a lot longer. I think that that is a that is true for every industry, that where I meet entrepreneurs, and one of the reasons I love doing the show is that see the consistent threads amongst whether it’s apparel, or beauty or beverage, or it just takes way longer, and you have to be willing to fall down and get back up and, you know, recognize that you made mistakes and pivot some of the things that you talked about, I think or that it’s so key, and, and plus have enough money to be able to go and try again. And all those things have the right team. So I think it’s and be a glutton for punishment, right? Yeah,

Dr. Iris Rubin 29:31
I think you know, I think it is it’s just about iterating and iterating until you get it, get it right. And what you mentioned about having the right team has been so, so huge. My business partner is my brother in law. He’s married to my twin sister, but when people ask me, you know, what’s your key to your success? I’m like, Well, you need a Greg, you know, but I when Greg came on board full time is when seeing really got legs, you know, but he’s a Wharton MBA. He’s He’s not as first time as entrepreneur so I think you know, surrounding I knew I needed to surround myself by by people who had been there done that experience and get the right team. And, you know, that’s that’s one of the I think the biggest joys of being an entrepreneur is getting to work with an amazing team to you this idea and the team brings this idea to life and to people’s

Kara Goldin 30:19
lives. That’s incredible. Well, last question. If you had to share one nugget of either a success tip or nugget of inspiration. I mean, you talked about having the right team, but is there anything else that you’d share? Knowing what you know?

Dr. Iris Rubin 30:37
It’s important to listen to those around you. But there will always be naysayers, like when I came up with this idea, and I talked to, you know, some people like, oh, there’s no way a rinse off product is causing a problem, but then I would talk to I talk to my mentor at Harvard. And he’s like, yeah, that, you know, that totally makes sense. And we even use medicated shampoos to treat certain skin conditions, you know, that’s a rinse off product. So I think it’s just like, doing the research. So you don’t want to just ignore the naysayers entirely, but do the research. And then ultimately, you know, if you have a good idea, just I think they’ll always be if it’s a really good idea, they’ll people that will say no, but you just have to kind of move past that.
