Meredith Mann 1:39
Thanks for having me. I’m excited to chat today.

Kara Goldin 1:42
I’m very, very excited to have you here. So for those who are not familiar with The Peachie Spoon, you just launched, but again, you’re a, you know, you’ve you’re sort of a celebrity on Instagram. You’ve got, I don’t know, I’d go that far, but, but you, you know, you’ve got a pretty nice size following, and you’ve done a really good job of building your reputation and trust and all of those things that are so important for community. And now you’ve launched The Peachie Spoon. So can you share? What is The Peachie Spoon for those who have not had a chance to try it yet.

Meredith Mann 2:21
Yeah. So my new product is a protein powder I love to supplement with protein powder how protein makes me feel really good. So that is my new product that just launched five weeks ago. But The Peachie Spoon brand, I started my Instagram in 2019 I just had a passion where I wanted to share these recipes that made me feel really good, blood sugar wise, and actually reversed my insulin resistance and hypoglycemia. I had a lot of blood blood sugar issues since 2005 and so. So anyway, so that was I just kind of started my Instagram and poured my life into the community, and I’m super thankful for it. And it’s slowly, organically, he has grown over the years to a recipe blog and a health coach and all of that kind of thing. So dapichi Spoon is a lot of things, but now it’s shifting into now I have a product that I’m super excited about that’s

Kara Goldin 3:14
so exciting. So how long was this in the works for you about

Meredith Mann 3:19
I would say at I wanted to, I knew I wanted to do a protein powder. There’s so many out there. I know it’s like a crowded market, but I wanted, there’s not many that are like the ingredients that I wanted, without the Adams and the emulsifiers and lectins that can be gut disruptor. Since I do eat a protein supplement daily, there was just, there wasn’t one like that, with a lot of testing, and then that was also tasted really good. So I really, I knew I wanted to create one for a while. But this whole, the whole process of the samples going back and forth, and finding a manufacturer I trusted, and premium ingredients, and the testing we chose to do is about, is about two years total the process. So, so

Kara Goldin 3:57
protein powders obviously have. Everybody knows that they’re out there, but what were you seeing was kind of the, you know, the problem that was in the market, the I always say, like the puzzle that needed solving, and that you felt like you had this idea that you really wanted to get out there, and it was so much more unique than what others were were doing.

Meredith Mann 4:21
I think really, just with I chose a whey protein isolate. Isolate makes it a little easier to digest because about 99% of the lactose is gone, so it’s virtually lactose free. But I chose that one because of the it has a complete amino acid profile for muscle building and health. Just personally, I’m in perimenopause, but I just know, like, once you’re about 35 or so, we start losing that muscle and aging. And I love collagen. I mean, there’s a time and a place for that. I take collagen, but it’s more for gut and skin and hair. Health is I really just wanted a protein to simplify nutrition, like I don’t want that’s 25 grams of muscle building protein, all of them are muscle building. And just to make it easier to hit your daily protein goal, because I love meat and eggs, but I can only eat it like once a day. So I love, I love a smoothie. I love to throw it in stuff. I love to put it in coffee or whatever. But I just, I saw that pain point where I really wanted it to be complete muscle building protein with that, that 2.6 milligrams of Leucine that’s like the muscle magic amino acid in that way isolate has that is higher than even beef. So I really, I wanted to create something just to simplify nourishment, so that we can honor our bodies and feel a bit as we age.

Kara Goldin 5:33
So you’ve got this audience on Instagram. How long did it take you to really build this community, which ultimately, I think, helped you to launch, get an early indicator of how Peachie Spoon would ultimately do. But how long did it take you, and how did that all start for you?

Speaker 2 5:53
So I started in 2019 and it was very much it was on a whim and that I just made up the name of The Peachie Spoon in like five minutes because I just thought it sounded happy and Southern, and it wasn’t on Instagram yet, so I took it before it was taken. So a lot of it was very just like, let’s just do it. But it was, it was like a process of the five years before that, I had this passion in my heart, and I was like, I feel like I can help people. I feel like I’m supposed to be helping people. All my kids were in school, so I kind of wasn’t bored, but I was feeling like I needed to be doing something. And so I just had that that passion of, I feel like I can help people with these easy recipes, because I don’t like to cook. And like I said earlier, the smoothies, the balance smoothies with my breakfast of the protein, fat and fiber, like a loaded, full meal smoothie with all the nutrients and that just right amount of carbs to keep your blood from fruit to keep your blood sugar stable. That was life changing for me and my relationship with food. And so it got me on the cycle of, like, my afternoon binges from blood sugar crashes and all of this. And it just really, I just finally had, like, inner peace and rest with food. I didn’t think about food all the time. I didn’t have food guilt because I over aimed or whatever. And so I really was like, I feel like I can help people. I think other people have blood sugar issues and they’re not feeling their best. My anxiety and I had migraines and mood swings and all that was stem from blood sugar. And so finally, healing my blood sugar and just not having these crazy highs and lows all day just really helped me so much. So that’s where I was like, I’m just gonna go for it and start Instagram. My first post was a smoothie, and that smoothie balance is the exact same today. And so I just didn’t ever think I posted consistently, and just over the years, you know, like, sometimes our recipe or post will go viral and you gain more followers, but it was all working, like it took time, you know, there’s and they’re still with the algorithms. You know, some post Julia would do really well, and some don’t, and it just is what it is. And I just never got in my head and over thought about it, I just hit post and think about, don’t think about the likes and the numbers, but think about who you are helping, even if it’s just 10 people, you might be really helping them and encouraging them, and maybe they’re cooking a dinner for their family that the whole family likes. That’s simple. And it’s, you know, just simplifying management. And I just thought about that and focused on my why and helping my community, and it slowly grew from 2019 to today. So I

Kara Goldin 8:12
love that, and especially I mean, you grew during a time where people were at home and they were looking for helpful tips and recipes and so I think in many ways, I mean the timing, although nobody really wanted a pandemic, but the timing just seemed to really, you know, work for you, and in growing this business. So when you think about, well, first of all, so many people hear about protein powders. You’re a nutritionist as well. But what do you tell people when they’re saying, you know, I just get really tired in the afternoon, or I skip breakfast, or, I mean, I can imagine there’s probably, like, two or three things that everyone says to you that you say, try this one thing. What is that thing that you really see that seems to really help a lot of people?

Meredith Mann 9:10
For sure, for me, protein was a biggie, but also keeping that I have a gentle plate structure. I don’t count macros, but I like the piece of just a gentle plate structure so it’s not so rigid. Because I don’t. I can’t count everything that makes me exhausted, but the high protein meals, and then keeping that carb starch to like, always make a fist, like one serving ish per meal, or skipping it, really helped simplify and keep my blood sugar more stable. And also that like having a high protein breakfast, that’s blood sugar friendly breakfast, that first meal that I kind of sets the tone for your whole day’s craving and hunger and all of that. So that’s why that smoothie was my aha moment, more so than necessarily eggs or something like that. I love eggs, but I’ll have that for lunch or dinner. Those high protein, high fiber smoothies really was, was such a game changer for me. So I would say making protein I probably. Priority and keeping, you know, not necessarily getting zero carb. Like, the goal is not to have, you know, perfect flat line and do keto, necessarily a perfect flat line on it, on your blood glucose monitor and that kind of stuff. But I would say, make protein a priority. And that can help a lot of things. Most it’s you have to try hard to get enough protein, for sure. Yeah.

Kara Goldin 10:18
And how much do you suggest for for the average consumer that they should be getting at least

Meredith Mann 10:26
we can be individual, but for me personally, my range is from 100 to 150 grams. Like, if I’m having a super hungry day, I’ll have more. But I try like 90 to 100 grams a day. Minimal is my goal, for sure.

Kara Goldin 10:38
And in The Peachie Spoon, you launch your own protein powder. So how does that compare? I mean, how many of these shakes do you need to have per day in order to achieve that?

Meredith Mann 10:50
I think whole food always wins, like a supplement. A protein supplement should be that it should be supplemented into a whole food diet and eating really, real food. So as I try to do just one serving a day of protein powder, maybe a serving and a half. Sometimes I like my smoothies to have like 40 grams of protein, but there’s 25 grams of complete muscle building protein and one serving of The Peachie Spoon protein powder. Yeah. So that makes it easy, especially if you would like pour it into your coffee, or blend it into your coffee with the frother or something like that. It makes it foamy and taste really decadent, or just even adding it in a shaker bottle to almond milk, that could be something you have like with your sandwich at lunch, because it’s just hard to get enough protein for a sandwich. Usually, there’s nothing wrong with a sandwich, but like adding that little protein supplement with it can help a lot. I kind of like to think of a protein powder supplement as like a tool to help you reach that goal without, you know, thinking about eating chicken all day long? Yeah,

Kara Goldin 11:42
no, absolutely. So building a brand is tough. You launched The Peachie Spoon and not very long ago, but obviously, as we talked about, you’ve built this community, and you’re known for tips and and wellness approach. But what strategies, or kind of guide, guiding principles helped you to really, you know, cut through and be able to launch this, this product, and sort of gate. I mean, you’re doing super well the first few weeks out of the gate. So what do you think, what has been, kind of the big strategy that you’ve been able to see success with this product? Yeah, thanks.

Meredith Mann 12:28
So I would say for sure, I think I feel like my community trusts me, because I’m always super honest, and I don’t like if I’m an affiliate or share something, it’s because I really do like the product, and I’m not, you know, I’m very picky about who I do collabs with. I don’t do don’t do very many paid collabs at all. So I really feel like I know my community trusts me and knows that I’m always an open book. I try to just always be myself. I’m not fake. I’ll go on there without makeup and tell them how I’m feeling and how I’m really feeling, or if I overate, like I’m not perfect, and I still have little binging behaviors if I’m over tired, or if I don’t eat enough protein early in the day. So I feel like my community trusts me with that, so I’m super thankful for them, but also my husband. If I didn’t have him, I don’t think I could have done it like he’s we’re not necessarily opposites, but he’s really good doing things that I’m not like he is in sales, and he’ll cold call, and he loves people in my final love people, but I think sometimes I’m a little bit more of an introvert, because I can talk to my phone all day, like Instagram. That’s really easy for me to talk on my phone, but I get exhausted, you know, with big groups and that kind of stuff. So he, without him, he, you know, we’ll just call manufacturers. He’ll call. He doesn’t care. He’ll just call. He’ll call grocery stores. He’ll call people. And he’s very likable. And I think without him, it would have been hard for me to find the manufacturer. I want to find the bag, the bag creator, and all of all the things that it takes. He’s helped a lot, so it’s been great to be a team with him. We’re adjusting to working together, but he’s worked from home since 2020 so I’m used to that. So now we’re just adjusting to him to working together also. But it’s been so far so good.

Kara Goldin 13:59
That’s awesome. When did you start to hear from consumers then that they obviously, people probably asked you, when are you going to launch your own protein powder? You’re always talking about protein but, but like, since you’ve launched it was the feedback exciting for you? I mean, I’m sure, you know, try, I always say that the consumer feedback for an entrepreneur, which is what you are and is, you know, really, really exciting. Sometimes it’s the fuel that you need when maybe it’s a lousy day, maybe you’re dealing with somebody on Instagram that is a hater, or, you know, like your manufacturer, something broke down in their equipment, or, you know, packages were lost, or whatever it is. Then all of a sudden, you get this consumer love letter saying, like, Thank you. So much. Oh my gosh. I never really thought this was possible. Can you share any of those types of notes and how that’s, you know, brought you, lifted you? I should say

Meredith Mann 15:12
yes. So for sure, I mean, I get a lot of DMS daily. No, daily. I probably would get like five or six a week. I would say, not about the protein powder? Well, I am good about the protein powder, but even just about Instagram, my my Instagram and like, maybe I’m making them it easier for them to meal plan and, like, actually cook three nights a week instead of, like, you know, a perfect meal plan and cooking every night and trying to be perfect, like, I try to make easy recipes so that there’s family friendly and it’s doable, like slow cooker stuff, or even, like, their relationship with, you know, maybe they were obsessed with counting macros and perfectly exercising, and they’re able to loosen the reins and a little more wellness without obsession and just really honoring their body and focus on that. Or if it’s somebody that doesn’t make health a priority. And so they’re kind of a self, sabotaging and didn’t realize it. And so no matter where they are on the spectrum and their health journey, I feel like I get, I do get messages every week, just in that that really like fires my why and why I’m doing this, but the protein water, I’m so thankful that I’ve gotten pretty much all five star reviews so far, and everybody loves the taste. I’m so grateful because, like, you know, like, I thought it tasted good, but through so many rounds of samples, my after teenagers, they really liked it, which they’re picking. So it’s like, well, if they like it, I think it tastes good, but you just don’t know. I mean, you just have to, like, Yeah, go for it. And I’m like, so far it’s, you know, I haven’t had anybody that hates it or anything. And I’m sure that’ll come I mean, you can’t make everybody happy. Everyone has different taste buds. It is what it is, but I’m really grateful for so far, everybody’s loving the taste. It’s really smooth, like the chocolate tastes like chocolate milk, the vanilla tastes like vanilla ice cream, but it’s not too sweet. Or have a, you know, at that sweet aftertaste or artificial taste, and everybody’s been able to digest it really well. So I’m excited about that because that, you know, a lot of protein powders can kind of get our heart to digest, or get tummy aches, or could just from those add ons, and who knows about the quality, or if it’s been tested well for heavy metals and all that stuff. So I’m really proud of it and excited about so far so good on her reviews.

Kara Goldin 17:14
How did you decide to launch with two skews?

Meredith Mann 17:17
So I have like over 15 moody recipes, but they’re all chocolate or vanilla protein. So like, just by adding, like, some different spices or different ingredients that completely Can, can change it the taste, because I love smoothies, and I love oatmeal and whatever my warm Collie rolls, it’s like a warm version of my smoothies. And I love all those every day as my breakfast. But I can do the same thing every day. So I have so many recipes, and like I said, they all work with chocolate and vanilla. So that was a start. But I do want some really fun flavors. I want to, like, I love Christmas. I want holiday flavors next year. I really, you know, I think all of that’s really fun. And so I’m excited to add more, but I just, you got to start somewhere. You know, it’s like, we just got to slow down and do what you can. I really want sample packs too. Like, sample sizes. The bag is really big. It’s 28 servings. Then you like, once again, you gotta start somewhere. I’d like to get a smaller bag and maybe get it in more grocery stores and and have sample packs so that people can try it before they buy a huge bag. But I’m learning as I go and everything takes some time, but I’m trying

Kara Goldin 18:21
what has seemed to work outside of the fact that you have a pretty big following on social are you actually, I mean, you’ve got a website, and then you’re actually running it through Instagram? Is that? Is that right, not just the traffic? Are you running the traffic? Or are you have you actually set up an Instagram store.

Meredith Mann 18:41
There’s not an Instagram shop, so I have a Shopify on my website, and then Amazon. Soon, we got approved, but it’s not on there yet, so next few weeks, it’ll be on Amazon. But, yeah, I have a Shopify on my website. So that’s, that’s the shop right now.

Kara Goldin 18:55
It’s fat. It’s fascinating. We’ve had a few people on who have talked about, you know, they’ve got a pretty big following on social, on Tik Tok or or some Instagram, and then they’ve set up the stores, and they’ve been amazed, because the people that are actually buying through those channels is Just is sometimes not even who they typically would think would buy it, and it’s and so we had one beauty company on that is sort of an older beauty company, but their Tiktok audience, for example, is significantly younger, and they have seaweed in their product. And so the one thing that they’ve really learned because they’ve been listening, is seaweed. Seaweed is just like a constant, you know, something that’s that’s very good and definitely trending with Gen Z and millennials and so anyway, I’ve been fascinated by how people are growing some of these. Businesses to rock on through some of these social platforms.

Meredith Mann 20:04
Yeah, Tiktok shop. I feel like Tiktok shops blowing up. So maybe one day I need to get out of Tiktok, but it’s not as active as my Instagram, for some reason, you know, like it’s but, I mean, I like Tiktok, and I love to scroll on there, and honestly, and I bought some clothes on Tiktok shop. I mean, it does get ya so I think there is just something to that it’s really it is growing, and you have to always be ready to shift onto what the new thing is. And, you know, learn how to do that as learn as you go.

Kara Goldin 20:33
When I think about building a company or launching a product, I always tell people like an idea is a dime a dozen, right? It’s the execution. It’s the it’s paying attention to the little things, right? It’s the details that matter. And you talked about having a partner, he happens to be your husband, who has, you know, really kind of taken on sort of parts of this business that you’re not as interested in, not that you couldn’t do these things, but it’s just not really you know your interest level. When you think about, like, the unsexy side of growing a business, is there any stories that come to mind where you’re like, Oh, that was that’s like, really hard. That’s not what I ever thought I was going to have to deal with and building this business. Well, just

Meredith Mann 21:28
even, like, packing the boxes like we you know, it goes way quicker as teamwork if I help them out there. But I really my passion is to be in the kitchen and creating new recipes. That’s what I want to be doing. But I’m trying to help so, yeah, so just banging with him while he does the computer and prints the label. And I literally packed the boxes and, you know, stuff them with my little adding Peachie Spoon stickers and trying to add fun things at first to some of the new the first time buyers, and just all of that work. I think I didn’t, I don’t know if that would do it, but it’s us, yeah. So it’s, you know, so far so good. Like I said, teenagers, they do take a lot to the post office and the UPS stores that they help a lot, but, yeah, it’s just learning as we go out. I think I just didn’t. I didn’t really, I’m not a good thinker through so, like, I just didn’t. I thought I’ll just figure it out when it happens. So I think that’s what we’re doing, and we’re learning. I don’t know we eventually will have a staff and not do that part anymore, and we’ll look back at these years hopefully and with good memories. But yeah, so far, we’re adjusting to all that, but it’s been a good experience. I feel like we’re growing and learning, and it’s really fun, and just trying to we’re always thinking of what’s next, you know, like shit is next? Just more protein flavors. Is it electrolytes? Because I there’s a lot of electrolytes out there, so I hadn’t pulled the trigger on it, but I’ve already on it, but I’ve already, you know, done the R and D and samples on that, because I like the higher potassium, lower sodium. So I don’t know if that’s next. And then we always talk about too. I mean, I’m known for my smoothies. I mean, maybe one day I’ll have a smoothie shop, but I don’t know if that’s a thing, you know, I just feel like we’re still so early. We’re like, I don’t know if I need a smoothie food truck. I don’t see what happens. I don’t know. So we’re still early, but I’m excited, and just, you know, learning as we go for sure.

Kara Goldin 23:12
I always think back on those early days where you’re trying to create a product that is different and unique. Obviously, if there was something that was perfect. You probably wouldn’t have launched The Peachie Spoon. I mean, it was, you know, you wanted to do something a little bit different, but with that, you got to find a co Packer. You’ve got to the right packaging. I mean, there’s so many steps that go into this, and you’re just getting going. But I always say that, you know, the challenges of first, you got to convince somebody to do this, and then you’ve got to, you know, you’ve got to also look at things like, they’ve got their business that they’re trying to run, and maybe some tooling breaks on the machine, or there’s some big failure that comes up along the way. Is there any stories where, obviously, you lived through it, you launched your product, but, you know, that was like a low point in The Peachie Spoon, you know, creation that was that you’re just shaking your head to,

Meredith Mann 24:18
well, I really, I wanted to make sure that it baked. Well, that was a biggie for me too, because I have, like, my flowers, protein brownies. I have a sweet tooth, and so I have all these recipes that are blood sugar friendly desserts. And the on, you know, like pea protein, if it’s a plant based, it might not ever set. It’s kind of wet, um protein in the same it kind of is gooey, like but I wanted a protein powder that made the perfect that yielded, like that perfect cakey texture, and it worked really well. So that was trial and error. With samples, I wanted to make sure, like, I found one family that tasted good and it didn’t have a weird odor. One of them had a weird odor from the sweetener. And so that was trial and error. But I finally, you know, landed on one. It smells good, because I’m a food smeller, it smells good. That it baked well and all of that. But yeah, at, you know, our blood sugar friendly wise, it had to be a sugar free protein powder, so the natural sweeteners would be allulo stevia and monk fruit. Stevia has been around forever. It’s been tested and but it’s great, but I wasn’t planning on using that. I wanted to use monk fruit or alveolus, and there’s not a protein powder with allulose. But it didn’t work. And the monk fruit had a really weird odor, which I use monk fruit all the time, and it doesn’t have odor, so it’s funny trial and I landed on Studio, and I’m happy with it, and I’m glad that it’s been around a long time and been really thoroughly tested, but, but that was a bummer, because I was excited. That was, I was like, I’ll be the first person powder with allulose, you know, because that’s a really great blood sugar friendly natural sweetener. But that was, it didn’t work out. So that was another thing where you just have to go with it, you know, and it’s like it wasn’t meant to be. Maybe one day, maybe I’ll have a protein bar with it, or something. I don’t know. I’m always open to something and always playing in the kitchen of what the next thing will be, but, but, yeah, that was that

Kara Goldin 26:00
well. And I think what you talk I mean, you’re at a point in the journey to where you wanted to get it out the door, and it was good, but you’re constantly innovating as an entrepreneur. I think, you know, my favorite saying is, the best entrepreneurs will never admit that it’s done right? Like it’s, it’s good enough, and you want to get it out there, but you’re constantly thinking about, you know, version two and version three. And what else can you do, whether that’s launching new SKUs, new flavors, you know, sample sizes, whatever it is, what’s the one piece of advice maybe you’d give to somebody who is, kind of, in those early stages of launching a company, knowing what you know today, after launching The Peachie Spoon, and kind of, you know, along those lines of, it’s not perfect, but you know, it’s good enough to Get it out the door, and you’re gonna keep, keep working on it.

Meredith Mann 27:03
Yes, I think just that. Like, don’t overthink it, and because Perfection isn’t gonna happen on the set of heaven. Like, it’s just not on anything. So I would say, just go for it. And, yeah, it can’t be perfect. Like, I know, you know, you’re very wise. You’ve been doing this for a very long time so, but yeah, I would just say, Don’t overthink it. And if you have something in the back of your mind you want to create, you want to do it, like, just go for it and follow through with yourself, because it won’t ever happen. You know, like, it’s so easy to have that, that dream on the back burner and just not make it ever happen. But you have to have a little hustle in you, like, you gotta do it and follow through with yourself, because it’s nobody’s going to do it for you, for sure.

Kara Goldin 27:44
No, I love it so. Meredith, thank you so much for joining us today on the show. And your journey, not only with building what you have on on social, but also with the product, is super inspiring. I can’t wait for everyone to try The Peachie Spoon for sure, and definitely, we’ll have all the info in the show notes as well. But really appreciate you coming on. And like I said, this is a great product. Everyone needs to go online The Peachie Spoon and try it, and check out Meredith too on Instagram and see what she’s talking about. Amazing recipes, lots to tune in for. So thank you again.

Meredith Mann 28:28
Thank you so much for having me. This was great.

And of course, feel free to subscribe so you don’t miss a single episode of our podcast, just a reminder that I can be found on all platforms at Kara Goldin, I would love to hear from you, too. So feel free to DM me, and if you want to hear more about my journey, I hope you will have a listen or pick up a copy of my Wall Street Journal, best selling book undaunted, where I share more about my journey, including founding and building. Hint we are here every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Thanks for listening, and goodbye for now. You.
